Never played System Shock 1, but I did play 2. It was an amazing experience. However, it scared the hell out of me; so much so that I actually had to start yelling out loud when running down dark corridors trying to keep myself from freaking out. Once I finished it, I couldn't go back...
When I play System Shock 2, be it the very first time or replaying, I finish it in one sitting.
The first time I played it was with headphones and whatever the hot 3D audio was in that time (A3D 2.0?)
It burned a weekend with the headphones on the whole time and no sleep. Needless to say when I was finished, I was disoriented and everything felt surreal. Everything, normal real life sounds and voices, had a tinny digitized sound to it and I could still hear all the ambient noises in the game (machines running in the background, etc). Took a day or two to recover, but damn, talk about an out of body experience and getting immersed into a game world...
It's still prob my favorite single player PC game of all time.
