I just installed a new ATI All In Wonder 9600 video card in my system and now it won't boot up. If I put the old nVidia card in, it works. Been fighting this for a couple of days without a lot of help from ATI.

specs:
ATI All In Wonder 9600 128MB 8x AGP
IWILL kk266plus motherboard w/ universal AGP slot (2x/4x)
VIA kt133a chipset
Athlon 1.2 GHz processor
512MB of RAM
Windows 2000 SP4

Old card was an nVidia GeForce2 MX-400 64MB 4x AGP

I have installed the latest drivers for VIA and IWILL, and I have upgraded my BIOS. Before installing the new card, I started in VGA mode and uninstalled nVidia drivers. Put the new card in and powered up. As soon as the system tries to access the new video card, the system beeps and then hangs before beginning POST. No signal to monitor, so I can't tell if there is any sort of error. Removed ATI card, put in old nVidia and the system started right up (and asked to install the nVidia drivers).

I set BIOS/CMOS settings according to ATI docs.

Any insight would be welcome.

If you can't post, it's not a Windows issue. I suggest trying another 9600 card.

Thanks for the reply. I actually got it working after about 8 hours of messing around with it. It seemed to start working after some magical combination of uninstalling/reinstalling the card. My best guess is that the nVidia uninstaller was leaving something behind that was causing the new ATI to fail. I found a utility referenced in this forum called Driver Cleaner that removed a few remaining nVidia files. The system booted successfully the next time that I put the new card in.

Hi,

Just a thought - If you rule out a dodgy card/incorrect insertion into motherboard, then it may be due to increased power consumption Are you using a PSU greater than 300W?

Good luck,

Andy
