If I have dual channel ram installed and try to turn on, I get a long string of beeps and then a reboot and a long string of beeps.

If I have only one stick it boots.

If I have the sticks in separate channels it boots.

any idea?

What's mobo make/model?

What RAM make/model?

Gotta make sure it's supported RAM....

Are you at the latest BIOS?

Can you explain ? I am a little puzzled by your answer.

There is no observable difference between running your ram in dual channel and single channel. The only way to tell is when benchmarking. We are talking about a difference in nano seconds.

Many times the memory needs a slight voltage tweak or manual settings applied in the BIOS settings. Certain boards are finicky about RAM and need further prodding to behave.
I've had to do it many times. Chances are someone has asked in another forum about your exact board and exact RAM( or close enough) and someone gave the settings.

Google your board + ram models and see if you get some good info.

Good luck to you.

I got it, thanks. I was thinking about some problems I had with my W520, which does not have bios settings for memory at all. Did not noticed he was talking about enabling dual channel vs just inserting the pair.

Dual channel might matter. It doesnt matter on 32nm intel and newer.

Check the RAM that you are using, I would bet that it is 1.65v+. The board will default to 1.5v and both the sticks won't run at the lower voltage. I saw this on a friends system with some older Corsair memory. 1 stick fine 2 sticks problems and if I put two sticks of 1.5v in it worked fine.
