My computer will not turn on. Push the power switch and nothing. The last time my computer turned on there was a weird problem with the internet having a connectivity issue, so I turned the computer off and it wouldnt turn back on.

I have an ANTEC sonata II Case with the Antec 450W SmartPower PSU... I have already had to exchange the PSU once due to a leaky capacitor. I will also admit that lately there has been a constant high pitched noise in the PSU when it was running. It wasn't the squeal that was the problem last time I exchanged it... it is a consistant high pitched sound.

I am trying to determine if its the PSU is shot... or if its the power switch. I have an EPOX 9-NPA MoBo and there is still an LED lit on it, it is the LED2 DIMM that is still lit.

CRIMENY!!!! I just pulled the power cable out of the back, and the LED2 DIMM went out. Plugged the cable in and the light stayed out... hit the power switch and the Machine just turned on??? Now I am totally confused??? I havent been able to get it turned on all week? Any thoughts? think I am fixed?

I would think you are. In the automotive world, the thing that is messed up under the hood is usually the last thing that was touched or worked on. Since you say you had previously exchanged the power supply, I would check the connection(s) from it to the motherboard. Pull them and re-seat them. It could have been something as simple as a loose cable from the wall to the PS-though the secondary light on the front of you box being on kind of kills that idea. Still-loose connections would be my first try. Best of luck. Lets hope you don't see it again.

OK now more on the problem... When I turn the computer off all 3 MoBo LEDs go out: the ChipLED, DIMMLED, and CPULED these LEDs are supposed to be indicators of where to look if the system fails to start.

The computer shuts down and all 3 LEDs go off... then I push the power switch and no PowerUp occurs... but the DIMMM LED lights up.

If I pull the power cable out of the machine and let that LED go out, I can plug the cable back in and then the computer will boot up.

Any thoughts on what the true problem may be?

Sounds like the power supply. Pulling the power cord, among other things, releases the ground. If physically removing the contact resets things, then there is some internal fault in the PS. If the motherboard was at fault, you'd probably have other malfunctions or symptoms. If, once the computer powers up, all is well, I'd suspect the PS.

Since this will be the 2nd bad Power Supply from ANTEC I have put in this case... I think I will be looking for another brand to replace it with. I will assume a 450 - 500 W PSU should suffice. Any suggestions?

Specs:
ANTEC Sonata II Case
AMD Athlon 3000+ 1.81Ghz
1Gig Ram
EPOX 9-NPA Ultra+ MoBo
80 GB HD SATA
EVGA 6600 GT PCI-E Video Card

I am going to double check with you guys. I am certain that the problem is in one of two areas. More one than the other.

1. Power Supply

or 2. motherboard

I am 95% sure that the issue is going to be with the PSU. I called Antec and they want me to install another PSU to see if I have the same problem, or take the PSU to a computer shack and have them test it. Since I do not have another PSU to use to test, I would have to pull the PSU out to bring it to a computer shack. Since I have to pull it out to do that I feel like just sending it back for the RMA... sucks to get a 3rd replacement.. but its free, and should hopefully last me until I get a new system. So should I really do all the checking to see if its the MoBo? Or just send it back RMA?
