I recently got some eMachines parts from a friend. Among them was a motherboard/CPU pair. The motherboard was the standard HP/Emachines/Compaq TriGem "Imperial Rev. G" model. The CPU is a Celeron-A 2.3GHz. (Old, but great for my grandparents who want an upgrade from their Pentium II laptop.)
Anyways, I stuck in a stick of 256MB PC3200 (made by PQI), and hooked it up to a newer L&C power supply (I wouldn't normally use it, but it's been fine in systems like these before.) The power supply starts sometimes when I short the power switch leads temporarily, but usually it goes off real fast. When it does stay on, it's only for 20 seconds or so, and there is a clicking noise coming from the motherboard. I disconnected the CPU fan, which was trying to spin but couldn't, and the clicking persisted.
I tested with another power supply, a TTGI 250W I had laying around, with the same results.
What do you think is wrong here? I'm guessing the mobo is messed up. In which case, I would get a Foxconn or other no-frills cheap and simple replacement (no, not ECS/PCChips.)
