System very slow at times

When my system is doing something in the background like copying from the cd drive or installing something my mouse freezes up or jumps around the screen. It actually feels like my system is giving all the computing power to a one function and that the rest slows to a crawl. If I play Unreal Tournament my sound and mouse also seems to jump but only for the first 2 minutes. It never used to give me this problem. What could be wrong?

Get a copy of Norton's System Works 2000 or 2001. I had problems with my system and discovered I had a lot of junk taking up my C: drive (I have a partioned drive)which impacted my virtual drive PLUS there were registry problems, orphaned files, ... throughout the rest of the drive. Do all the tests including updating files from the Net that Norton does automatically.
