System upgrade

Updating my system, and need a few things bounced around. Upgrading a P3-450 to an AMD 1700xp, Epox 8kha+, 256 ddr. Hanging on to my voodoo 3k and my vortex2. Will still be running 98se. Are there any known conflicts w/either of these components? My present setup is running the latest intel chipset drivers ( biostar mobo), tho I know that a clean install is the best to do, if I have a ghost w/o intel drivers, would that be OK to go with?

When reading up on benchmarks of XP systems, what is the lo-down on SSE being on or off. Is this a benchmarking problem or a system problem?

Thanks

Those should run great!

<< if I have a ghost w/o intel drivers, would that be OK to go with? >>

You could prolly get into windows with that. But only to delete everything in device manager and then redetect everything.

It's both, but it only effects one program. MS's WME (Windows Media Encoder) 7 and because of that, SYSmark 2001 doesn't give scores that are SSE enabled. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the SSE thing.

Welcome!! There shouldn't be no problems with your set up if you're staying with Windows98. I think there are compatibility issues with a Voodoo card (5000 i think) and WindowsXP. But if you're staying with Windows98, it should be fine. Hope this helps.

I doubt there any conflicts, but my suggestion is that you leave win98 where it belongs -- in the trash bin.
Get win2k or XPPro, and do a clean reformat/reinstall.

As for SSE, it depends on the application. If the application reads the bit ID of the proc that says whether it has SSE or no, then it will work. If it reads to see if the name of the proc is "GenuineIntel" then it wont use SSE.

I don't know which progs read the bit and which the name.

1. Before you start building your system go to VIA's website and download the latest 4 in 1 drivers.
2. Get the latest drivers for the components, sound and video cards, etc in you new system.
3. Format your hard drive and do a clean installation of your OS.
4. Install the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers after you have the OS
up and running.
5. Install the latest drivers for your components, sound and viedo cards, etc.

Thanks for the info. I'vebuilt a few vanilla biz systems and they were all fresh installs. Just didn't want to go through all the 'update downloads'. Don't mind watching a few Bab5 vids, just didn't want to tie up the line for hrs. on end. Wish $soft would put it all in one nice folder for future reuse.

As the $ comes in, a g3 is in the works.

This IS the best site out there. Get lots of good stuff from you all.
