after months of planning and analysis...finally come out with the following components for my system upgrade:

amd 1.4ghz 266mhz
Gigabyte dxc ddr mobo(amd760)
2x 256mb PC2100 CL2.5 Crucial ram@CL2.0
Enlight 300w psu
Swiftech 370 or maybe Alpha pal6035
Maxtor 60+ 7200rpm ata100 30gig
Western digital 7200rpm ata66 15.3gig
Sblive value
Creative 3d blaster tnt2 ultra
Sony 52x cdrom
Iomega 250mb internal
3com/scv eternet card
triple boot win98, win2k pro, win2k advance server

i'm not into overclocking and all i want is stability and good performace!
i'm planning to use this for 3yrs before next upgrade...
main uses: intensive web programming, web designing, digital graphics editing and multimedia software development

any comments? any compatibility problems?
hmm....should i buy a rounded ata100 harddisk cable....or should i use the default motherboard cable? btw how come those rounded cables so ex....whats the differences?

is maxtor harddisk hot? i have a kingkong harddisk cooler for my old western digital...but that cooler's real too noisy and crazy
i feel like doing away that cooler!!!

hope to get as many feedbacks as possible

Personally prefer DVD or CDRW over CD but maybe you have those already. Anyways I'd go with an Antec case, I just bought an SX1040 and after hours of research IMO it is the top of it's class. Also, if your worried about cooling the hard disk, the Antec as a place to put a fan for hard disk cooling.

Also, If your into it SB Live Platinum or Hercules GTXP, if your not into the extra goodies they offter then probably Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

Rounded cables are to increase air flow, I've heard other people rounding their own normal flat cables but I don't know, basically that decision is up to you.

PS. Not sure about ATA 66 and ATA 100 as I've been told the slower one will slow down the other but the difference is negligible as ATA100 isn't even really that if you get what I'm saying.

AH! I see, I thought you were going to BUY it with your other spec's. By all means don't throw it away. Hmm...I have the same problem as you as I have an older 10 gig i'd like to use but I'm not sure what ATA it is though I'm sure it's not 100. What I would do and what I was planning was use my faster harddrive for awhile, then if I feel the need to I would install the second and see how the performance changes. Other then that you can sell it, use it for spare parts, us it for another built box. :) Well I think that's everything.

<< hummmmm...you're not concerned with having a SB live with that Via AMD south bridge? >>

will that pose any great problem?

TNT 2?

:( if you are going for 3 years.. get a pro or geforce 3.. (but you will have to dish out a little more) !!

That would come in handy in graphic design wouldn't it? Also what about more RAM? Maybe 1gig? You seem to be hardcore into graphics and web development and 1gig would speed that up a bit:)

Hi lighthse,

Well, if your going to be doing heavy graphics editing then you may need something better than the TNT2. I don't think you need the GeForce 3, just something with good 2D quality like an ATI Radeon LE if you wanna save some money, or a good Matrox card.

Hope that helps.

i belive you need to have the same speed on one ide channel, like 100, or 66 for both, im not sure though. And if you want another internal cd-rom drive, just make it slave, and put it with the rest of your cd roms.(thst is, if your mboards supports that many drives)

I always try to keep my cdrw on a different channel from my main hard drive,
because as I understand it IDE will only allow access from one device per channel. the idea is it can read from one channel while writing to another

A couple of things to think about, why not get PC2400 memory to make sure you don't have in memory related issues. Also if you are going to be doing video graphics you might want to get 3 smaller ATA 100 drives and put them in a RAID 0 for better performance. As long is you have a backup scheme to save your work, the RAID 0 is the way to go. Personally I would get a better video card (like a GeForce 2). I bought the Game Theater because I do some video editing and the break out box makes it so easy to hook and unhook audio sources, I like it because you can set it where you want not like the SB live that goes into a 5 1/4 bay.
