I am getting ready to upgrade my primary workstation. I have about $500 to spend to upgrade my system before I start a fairly large video editing project in July.

My current system is pretty stable and seems fairly fast with most applications. Storage is definitely one of the areas I have to focus on. I need at least another 100GB of storage space for this project.

Current setup:

CPU: Intel P4 HT 2600MHz
Motherboard: Dell Dimension 8300
Case: Dell Dimension 8300
Memory: 1256MB of Mushkin Blue PC3200 (now 2GB)
Video Card: ATI All-In-One 7500 (ATI Radeon)
Hard Drive: 2 x Western Digital IDE 120GB 7200RPMS
Monitor: Dell 1800FP Ultrasharp 18" LCD
Drives: NEC 4x DVD-RW, 8x NEC DVD, Floppy
Sound Card: Creative SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 Digital
Speakers: Creative I-Trigue 3300
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP SP2
Other Components: Logitech Cordless Comfort Duo Keyboard & Mouse

I just bought another GB of Mushkin Blue so I will have 2GB of RAM (I?ve already deducted this from my budget). I?ve been considering switching my primary drive to a SATA drive however I?m not entirely sure if the performance is worth the extra cost of SATA unless I go for a 10K RPM drive, which would take up a lot of my budget. I?ve also considered grabbing a large drive (probably a 200-250GB) for archival and then putting my two 120GB on a mirrored RAID.

Any recommendations/suggestions would be welcome. I haven?t kept up with these forums or most of the hardware/software talk in about a year (last time I built a system).

Thanks! :)
