Well, this is somewhat problematic to explain since it's lengthly and it's roughly 2 am here but I will attempt to explain since I need this advice for tommorow. Come hell or high water, I intend to upgrade tommorow. Patience was never one of my good traits. I have waited far, far too long for this.

Anyway, the conclusion of a six year legal battle with our insurance company has following been resolved and we have gotten compensation for the contents of our house that burned to the ground many years ago. I was allocated $5,000 CDN to do with what I will. Therefore, I have decided to build a gaming dream system so to speak or at least as close to a dream system as possible. The goal is to get the best system I can within that monetary range that will last the longest before needing any kind of upgrade.

My current system is as follows:
--------------------------------
Pentium III 600E overclocked to 774 mhz.
ABIT BX6R2 Motherboard.
128 megs of generic PC 100 SDRAM (Nightmare. Ugh.)
Western Digital WD205AA 20.4 gig 5400 rpm.
3dfx Voodoo 3 AGP
Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer
Sony CD-RW 32/10/4X CD-ROM (CRX-145E)
Samsung Syncmaster 900SL 19" monitor
Altec Lansing AC-54 speakers (I think. Two speakers and sub)
Generic network adapter (For the cablemodem)

I believe that covers it all. I did not list the various game controllers, keyboard or mouse since they aren't particularly relevant. A majority of these components are going to my mom since I'm a fairly nice guy I will only charge her a nominal cost for them, of course :)

I don't believe the sound card, monitor or CD-ROM need upgrading at this point. They are all very adequate and nice. At least I think so anyway. RAM, CPU and MB all need to be replaced as well as the memory of course. Hard drive as well, damn it I hate that 5400. It's so god awful slow. I'm not satisfied with any of the graphic cards on the market right now, I will just have to wait for the V5 6k to come out. Not sure about the speakers. I need a new full tower case as well, cooling suggestions would be much appreciated.

This is where you could help me out. I'm unsure of what I should buy to meet my price above that yields the best price to performance ratio. So I need everyone's help, any help at all would be great.

Additionally, I live in Ottawa so if any of you in Ottawa or even Ontario could give me some local buying advice in terms of good places to shop, good prices or even general local shopping advice in general that would be great. Price estimates as well, in CDN dollars, of course.

I believe that covers everything. My thanks to any who take the time to post some advice. I appreciate it. I'll check back here tommorow when I wake up (late, late in the morning :)) for replies before I decide on a course of action and set out in search of all the components I will need to assemble my new sytem.

Thanks AMB for the advice. I guess I'm gonna kinda stuck with a Thunderbird eh? Not that this is a bad thing I suppose. I've just heard alot of horror stories of it not working well with video cards, software, etc. Every game readme seems to have a section about problems with the Athlon with a video card or this or that.

Not that I have a choice, no one is this damned city even has a 1 GB Intel processor :(

Definitely go with an Athlon 1Ghz. Go with a RAID motherboard with a couple of IBM Deskstars, for the ATA100. Get a GeForce2GTS definitely. Go with some Mushkin RAM, I highly recommend it, and lots of it. Also get a SBLive! of course. Get a Viewsonic 19" flat screen. Those are going for around $400 I think. That's about it for my suggestions.
