Hi

I was wondering if anyone can help me, I have a problem with the temperatures in my system. I have just built a new PC but the CPU temp is showing 67c the motherboard is 57c and when I touch the heatsink of the VGA card it is extremely HOT. I haven't installed any OS yet but just checking temperature through the BIOS Health Check.

My specs are:

AMD XP2600 + 333 CPU
Gigabyte GA-7vax-a Motherboard BIOS F2
Crucial 512 ram PC3200 cl3
IBM Hitachi deskstar 123gb hard drive 8mb
SONY 52x24x52 CDRW
ABIT Solaro nvidia chipset 5200 AGP 128MB 8x vga card
350w Power Supply (it says for Pentium 4 and PFC whatever that means) it fits the motherboard.

Your help is much appreciated
thanks

That seems way too hot. If you keep the case open, do the temperatures go down? How many fans are in the case? You should have at least one in back towards the top blowing out and one in the front on the bottom sucking air into the case.

Some BIOS temp readings are not always that accurate....does the heatsink on the CPU feel very hot....you may need to install an OS and install a different temperature checker to compare readings....this will of course load the CPU and increase the heat though.

What case are you using?
What Heatsink/Fan is on the CPU?...is it the retail one that comes with the processor?
Fan is plugged into CPU fan header on the motherboard?

With that system I would recommend at least 1 intake and 1 exhaust fan, exhaust fan is more critical. PFC is power factor control I believe and is generally found on higher quality power supplies, does yours have 1 or 2 fans on the PSU? Fan(s) on PSU working okay?

Thanks for the advice, the heatsink on the cpu doesn't feel very hot , the only HS that is hot is the one on the VGA card.

The heatsink on cpu is the retail one supplied with the processor and it is plugged in the cpu fan header on the motherboard.

I have a generic case not high quality i think and has one exhaust fan. It says for pentium iv and PFC , just wondering if that is ok?

Thanks again for your help

An overworked power supply can generate a lot of heat as well. If you have a cheap case, chances are that the PSU is also cheap and low power. Still, you should get the extra case fans. With the cover off, run a portable fan directly into the open case and see if that helps.

ok wil try that and see if it makes any difference.
Just wanted to know if I am using the correct PSU as it says for PENTIUM IV & PFC??

thanks

PFC is a good thing...I just can't remember what it does....possibly something to do with more stable voltages etc.

If it says Pentium 4 that is fine....all that meant was that it has the extra 4 pin power connector that P4 boards needed when they were released. the new Nforce 2 boards need this connector also.

You can use a Pentium 4 PSU with P4 or Athlon...it no matter.
