System stops booting into Win XP randomly...

Last week my system stopped booting to win XP home telling me that I could select "last known good configuration." When that is selected, it gets to the screen with the windows logo and just sits there for hours.

If I choose boot windows normally, also nothing happens.

I had to format and re-install the whole system to fix this issue.

Today, it happened again. I do not want to format and re-install because I think it will keep happening.

I guess my question is how do I even start diagnosing something like this given that there are no error messages or anything. The screen saying Windows could not boot properly on the last attempt simply decides to show up out of nowhere, and it seems like the only fix is to format.

I would start by running memtest from a bootable cd or floppy. If that comes back OK, download a diagnostic utility for your hard drive and run that.
