system slows with hard disk activity = help

Current config:
Asus A7V
Duron 600 oc to 950
Quantum 7200 ATA66 drive

My problem:
Whenever I have a lot of disk activity (for example, when I copy large files from one dir to another), my system slows down a bit and I especially notice it because my mouse "hic-ups" a bit across the screen.

Any ideas? I have DMA disabled, will this help if I enable it?

All latest drivers installed on WinME including the via4in1 etc.

thanks.

Definitely enable DMA. You will have some slow downs and hic-ups when you hard drive is cranking away. It's already busy, and asking for more will hurt performance.
