System Slowdown After Fresh Win 8.1 Install

Hi,

I had Windows 8 running on my Probook 4540s. Specs: Core i5 3210m, 7670M, 4GB, 750GB 5400rpm.

I started having issues with my audio drivers so I decided to fresh install a new copy of Windows 8.1 with Update. All the latest drivers were installed.

Now I am facing multiple slowdown issues which I really shouldn't with a fresh windows installation. Boot takes far more time, and to top that, once my account is logged in, the system is unresponsive for a time with the HDD showing 100% activity in the task manager. Sleep is also working practically like a restart: when I close the lid and resume, it goes all the way to POST to Login and so on. I checked the lid closed action in the Power Options: it is set to sleep.

Anyone having any ideas? Should I got back to vanilla 8?

First, the slowdown: Sounds like there's a lot of excessive disk activity. Open up Task Manager or Process Explorer and find out the source of that activity.

Second, sleep: Sounds like you're hibernating (or even shutting down) instead of sleeping. Make sure Hybrid Sleep is not enabled (it should be off by default on laptops).
