-= Using updated Win2kPro, with the specs located in the 'VicodiN's Medicine Cabinet' link in my sig =-

Ever since I decided to defrag my system, my computer always decides to 'restart' when I choose the option to 'shutdown'... Ive never had this problem until I defragged my hardrive. I know a clean install of the OS will most likely fix the problem, but is that my only option? Id really like to avoid the clean install if possible, considering Ive done it alot lately.

I searched the archives to no avail

Any info/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Are you absolutely sure that you did nothing else recently that could have caused this problem? Defragmenting the hard drive is a very unlikely cause. I don't even see how it is possible.

I know... Tell me about it... I am ABSOLUTLEY POSITIVE nothing else could have cause the problem... During the day I decided to defrag my harddrive, I decided to run a virus check, and I also successfully shutdown a couple times throughout that same day without any problems...

THEN, after I did defrag my harddrive, Im getting this stupid problem that I cant put my finger on... I tried to 'shutdown' numerous times, thinking maybe it was just a fluke occurance, but unfortunately it wasnt.

I searched microsoft.com for any hints regarding a similar problem, but havent seen anything... I see XP had a similar problem, but it seemed to be resolved with the SP1 release.

Any help is welcome :)

I had the same problem in 98se. I reinstalled on top so I wouldn't lose all the programs there. It worked. Shouldn't take too long if you've got the cabs on your hdd.
