hi

i just put in a new 128mb slot but system (windows 98) does not show this extra 128mb. i went to the setup utility (F1 when computer boots up), it also does not show it.

the ibm tech support site said that my autoexec.bat should have smartdrv to show this but it doesn't have smartdrv.

what should i do?

thanks for all your help!

I can think of four things that could be causing this:

1) The stick of RAM isn't installed correctly. Check this first.

2) Windows 98 isn't designed to use more than 512 MB of RAM. If you try to use more RAM than this with Windows 98, you can run into various problems, such as Windows not seeing the RAM correctly. Since the BIOS also does not see the RAM, however, I don't think that this is the problem.

3) Your system might have a BIOS or motherboard limitation that is causing it not to see the extra RAM. I know that certain IBM Aptiva models are limited to a pathetic 128 MB of RAM, and that others need a BIOS update to use more than 128 MB correctly.

4) Your stick of memory or motherboard memory socket might be bad, or it might be the wrong type for your system. Double check that you bought the type of memory that you need, and get a replacement if you need it.

Don't worry about the SMARTDRV settings, however. SMARTDRV is a drive caching program, and you certainly don't need it to use the extra memory.
