System restore won't restore to any restore point.

A week or so ago Firefox crashed and took my bookmarks with it. I want to do a system restore to before the date it crashed so I can get them back. However, when I try to do a system restore to any date in the list, it doesn't work. My pc reboots and after the reboot it tells me that the system restore was unsuccesful and doesn't give me a reason. Any idea why this is happening?

It is suspiciously sounding like a virus or trojan. One of the things they do is disable System Restore.
