Where does XP save System restore info?

does it take a lot of space everytime i make a restore point?
i want to make a point everytime i install a new program, but im afraid its going to eat up alot of MB on my HD.

I don't know were exactly, but I do have a bunch of "$******" folders in my windows folder. They may be some install temp folders or restore folders. I don't know for sure.
I've always dissabled system restore as it does take up hard disk space but you can also configure how much space will acltualy be used for system restore.
