System Restore from Best Buy backup

HI all

I have a question about using a restore disk for my laptop. The disk was made by the Geek Squad. (I know, I should have done it myself, but someone else bought the comp).

Anyway, when I insert the disk, nothing happens. Whenever I have done a restore to original conditions with disks I have made, the disk boots up and asks if you want to restore the system. This disk does nothing. I even tried rebooting with the disk in the computer but still nothing happens.

Has anyone else used a restore disk created by Best Buy?? Is there some special trick or command that you need to use to get the process started, maybe going into Bios and changing the boot order? I am going to try to find time to stop by one of their stores and have them check the disk itself, but if anyone could give me some ideas it might save me a trip to the store, which is not particularly close by.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had the same problem on an E Machine that my neighbor bought from Best Buy with a restore disk. It too would not boot from that disk. If I remember correctly, their restore disk does not contain the operating system, only the drivers and programs.
I would suggest calling Best Buy and ask them how to use the restore disk and if the operating system is on that disk.

Thanks for the replies. I called best buy and they said you have to go into the bios and change the boot order to DVD first. Personally, I think they made the restore process confusing just so most people would still have to bring in the computer to Best Buy even though you had paid for a restore disk.

Anyway, I ran check disk and found and corrected some errors and updated the graphics driver. I also ran all the clean-up programs I could find. It seems to be working OK now, so I am not going to try to do the restore unless absolutely necessary, because I dont really know what is on the disk they gave me.

The boot order has to be set to boot from CD/DVD first to run any type of CD/DVD-based restore media - this isn't a special requirement just limited to restore discs created by Best Buy but rather applies to any type of restore disc.

If you want, you can leave the machine set to boot from CD first as a default - worst case, it simply adds a few seconds to your boot time when starting up.

On some machines (Dell comes immediately to mind), it is possible to do a one-time boot order sequence change by pressing a key (for Dell, it is usually F12) at the manufacturer logo during post. HP has a similar facility, but I don't recall right off (haven't worked on one in a while) which key you have to press during boot to access the menu to choose the boot order sequence.

i can never remember which key i need to press for what computer so i normally go for F1, F2, F10, F12, del, and i think i've seen c or d be the magic key before. of course when i'm annoyed (often the case when i hit the wrong key repeatedly) i'll press all the keys on the keyboard and wait for the computer to start beeping at me. that normally pulls up the menu i was hoping for.
