System resources?

When you boot cleanly, under the performance tab in system, how much free System Resources do you have?

Mine starts at 92% and goes down to 86% just to open IE5.0

Question: What resources? Is this just ram it's talking about? Since the machine is just sitting there, could it actually take cpu?

Also, if you do post your % free resources and don't have your config in your signature, could you put a brief summary of your system (just cpu, ram and hd size) I'm trying to get a gauge for what is what here.

Thanks :)

resources depends on what you are running in the foreground and background of your comp. and some OS's have better resource management than others. also depends on if you have a trojan running in the background...;) hehehe

You fail to mention the OS, the amount of RAM available... etc.
Difficult to answer the question :)

I believe it has a lot to do with how much RAM you have. For example, I run 256MB at usually 69% free. My buddy runs 128MB with 72% free. Now I can't do the math now but obviously I have a lot more available at any givin time than he does. Also, from what I understand is that the more resources you have available, the more windows will use. Is this correct?

Resources has NOTHING to do with how much SYSTEM Memory you have.

You can have 2GB Memory and still run out of resource without actually using even 200MB memory.
Part of the 'resources' are the graphical stuff like icons and menus and toolbars and stuff.

Win9x has a 16bit resource limitation there for you can only have 64KB of resource REGARDLESS of how much memory you have.
WinNT kernel has a 32bit resource limitation, therefore you can have 4GB of resource.

xtreme: then is there anything we can do so that resources don't dry up too quickly and force us to restart our computer or something?

1- always monitor your resources and see which program is taking AWAY your resource and NOT GIVING it back when you close it.
2- switch to a NT based kernel, with a 32bit resource limitation, there IS no limitation, as your RAM will always be under 4GB.

how can we do that? is there any program in windows 98 that allows us to do that?

hmm... don't quite understand this. why is it that with a 16 bit resource limitationm we have a 64 KB resource, and with 32 bit resource limitation that jumps to 4 GB?

Win9x has a resource monitor built in, I think you find it in system tools inside the Start menu.

well
16bit - 65536 units - 65536 bytes of data ==> 64KByte
32bit - 4294967296 units - 4294967296 bytes of data ==> 4GByte

Therefore with a 32bit resource limitation, there will be no limitation since you will ALWAYS run out of system memory first before you run out of resource. Another good reason to use WinNT/2K.
