System Resources Low? Blue Screen of Death!

I have a computer that is freezing up a lot. When I say freezing up I mean it usually still has the ability to manuever the mouse but you can't click on anything. It has come up with the message System Resources Low and offers to shut down some programs to help fix the problem. However the programs that it offers to shut down are not running in the first place. I usually have to end up shutting it down because it goes into the Blue Screen of Death and won't come out. Once it reboots it is fine. Could this be a problem with Ram? Please post any suggestions. Thanks

The System is running on Windows 98 with 128mb of SDRAM. Not sure of what type of Processor at this time.

You have too much running on your machine. You may have apps that are running even though you don't think they are. You may also have spyware running that you don't know about. It could also be a virus or your anti-virus programm hogging resourses.

If you have full time anti-virus running, turn it off. Download adaware or spybot and get rid of any spyware that may be running. If you don't have full time anti-virus running, run a full system scan. Look in your start up folder and disable everything except what you absolutely need. Upgrading your ram may help too.

Want to see what is REALLY running?
Try this
Start/Run/(type)msconfig

punch the startup tab

The only things that MUST run are SYSTEM TRAY and REGISTRY

Keep in mind the more things you uncheck the duller the system gets

If you are into file sharing there are atleast 3 items PER type (kazaa, imesh, ect) that can be turned off .
If it looks even vaguely like a windoze item your best bet is to leave it on
