System Requirements: 1Gig RAM!!

Some current estimates from compile sizes on comp.arch have indicated that that the code size of IA-64 programs is ~2x that of x86 compiled programs (and in some cases could become much worse). Perhaps that explains some of it....

Hurrah! Now I have an excuse to buy 1 gig for ram. Of course I will never need to run that compiler, but who cares. 🙂

Speaking of High Game requirements, I heard that the game Planetside by Verant will require a 1ghz cpu as Minimum !!

:|

Planetside aint gonna be out for another year, by that time P3-1gig or T-Bird 1 gig should be way under $100 and part of even most low end systems.

Max Paynewhich should be finally out this month, recommends a 1Ghz CPU, 64MB Videocard and 192MB RAM for hi-detail.

Just think about how much information and code the compiler has in memory while trying to figure out Explicit Parallelism (EPIC for Itanium), etc...

1GB isn't that much. Especially considering you are also running Win2k 64bit. NT4 SP6 needs 256MB to 512MB to run comfortably.

The one I find funny is actually the first one:
"Intel® C++ Compiler for IA-32 systems
?Pentium® processor with MMX? Technology, 200 MHz or later Pentium processor.
? Intel® Pentium® 4 processor recommended. "

You only "NEED" a 200MHz processor but we recommend our latest greatest 1.4GHz+ processor 😛

"Some current estimates from compile sizes on comp.arch have indicated that that the code size of IA-64 programs is ~2x that of x86 compiled programs (and in some cases could

That's because the binaries (for the time being) have to contain both IA32 and IA64 code (ie: FatBinary type compilations). If it was only IA64 code it would be the same size or smaller.

That Is Crap......

If 3dmark2k is any indication of what will be required (I understand it uses the same 3d engine) then you will get by with much less.

There isnt 500mhz difference between Q3 and Payne graphically (or 32 megs of video).

IMO of course

No, I wasnt doubting you Apoppin.

Im just saying that its crazy saying a 1ghz is reccomended.

The latest game with high requirements was Tribes2, and that was 600 reccomended. Now 1ghz? Thats a 400 mhz jump! and I dont think Maxs graphics are all THAT good. There good but not 400 mhz over Tribes2 good. In fact it looks like Q3 with better models and animation to me anyways.

Yea thats just crazy, having a recommendation is just evil

A high detail game will run faster and better on a faster computer, OMG I did not know that 😉

Well, I guess it's a good excuse for me to upgrade - MaxPayne, not the compiler.

🙂

And yes, I AM looking forward to the new game.

Dude....

<< There isnt 500mhz difference between Q3 and Payne graphically (or 32 megs of video). >>

OMG! Ok either maybe I'm blind or something. Yes obviously it probably isnt 500mhz difference (but who could measure that anyway)but there is a HUGE difference in the amount of power needed to run any of these new games compared to Q3. I can run Direct Connect, Musicmatch, AIM, and countless other programs all why playin Q3 just fine, great fps actually. But tryin to do that with even the demo of the Lobby scene with all the stuff tweaked down (lowest pos resolution, 16 bit, etc) not a chance. Heck you're probably right when the difference in mhz is not as great, but the video card so is. The video card is the current bottleneck for just about everyone out there, (unless you own a gf3 =( or unless you have a really crappy system and a good vid card. But either way, the Q3 engine is no where close to what these new graphics engines are in terms of resource requirements. my 2 cents.

"the Q3 engine is no where close to what these new graphics engines are in terms of resource requirements."

Well then maybe I should have said:

The developers of these new graphic engines need to optimize thier code better!

Think back, the difference between 133 mhz and 450 mhz was 😎

The difference between 600 and 1ghz is 🙁

Just because its there to use, doesnt mean developers should be lazy in optimising for the lowest CPU, ram, vidcard.

<< The developers of these new graphic engines need to optimize thier code better! >>

exactly. q3 has great programming. carmack is a genius. cant wait for q4 and doom3.

First of all, it's "Compiler", not "Compilre", and second of all bloatware has nothing to do with the amount of RAM it consumes 😉

I make maps for Counter-Strike, and the compiler I use, in theory would require about 512 MB or RAM...depending. The reason being is that for various processes everything goes through the RAM. After it rounds out of RAM it goes to the Windows swap file...needless to say, that takes forever. The reason they are requiring that much RAM is probably just so you can actually use your computer for part of that day. My guess is that it will work with 512 or 768, but just slow as hell towards the end. Muskin had a deal for 3 512 MB sticks for some $400, that's about 133 bucks per 512 MB...very good deal. They don't have it going now, but maybe they will again soon. I remember a few months ago when it was $500 for 1 512 stick.
