System refuses to overclock

Hey guys, I have a strange problem. I recently built a new computer:

i5-3570K
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H
Patriot Viper DDR3 (2x8GB) 1600
OCZ Elitexstream 800W PSU

I cannot seem to overclock on this system. If I try anything at all (even a 35x multiplier) the system refuses to boot and restarts with default BIOS. If I try to set the CPU speed/voltage to its default values manually, it also reboots. It seems to only boot with default settings only. I'm thinking it's a faulty motherboard but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Try Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility and see if you can get anywhere.

Also, try this thread - the author used a Gigabyte Z77 and has explicit instructions.

I can tell you its a faulty mobo. Cuz my dumb a** bought a used P5K for 45 bucks when mine died. If you touch anything in the overclock section it will not boot and you have to power down switch off then on and hope it comes up,,, you cant change voltage you cant the only thing you can change is the FSB so I took it to 399 , get this everything else is set to auto,, even the voltage,, I did a pencil voltmod but the voltage raises on its own as you take the bus up,,,, on its own, I didnt even know thats possible....... so ya its slow transaction booster is off, 399 instead of 463 with my other original p5k @ 1.456v .. we could have sent it back , but didnt. and the firewire doesnt work and the eSATA port doesnt work, so Im using usb 2.0 for external ...... and the mobo gets extra hot so I had to dial up the speed on the 120 right on it sitting on video card... gl

Nevermind, found it. It's a BIOS issue... upgraded to the latest firmware (which has "improved system compatibility"). Apparently a lot of users have the same issues when upgrading BIOS as well, so for anyone else who stumbles upon this, try different BIOS.
