System rebooting instead of shutting down.

I have a Gigabyte 7DXR+ board with a Athlon 2100+. When I put in a SIIG 3 port firewire card in any PCI slot, it works fine, but my system will no longer shut down. If I tell W2k to shut down, it reboots instead.

The other cards in the system right now are a Radeon 8500 and a DVCII. I already tried removing the DVCII, but that didn't help the situation.

Any help is appreciated.

jalaram,

I had a problem just like yours last week, except with this customers machine it ended up being the modem causing the problem. Even though it "works fine" it really doesnt. The card is bad, and will need to be RMA'd. In the machine that I was working on the modem hooked up to the internet ok and worked ok, but the machine would reboot on shutdown every time. I replaced the modem with the exact same kind, and it shut down.

I've seen this problem a fair amount of times in the forums. Often times it is because Windows is getting a blue screen error and 2000/XP are configured by default to reboot on blue screen. If you disable reboot on blue screen, you might be able to see the error message (if that is indeed the problem) and do a search on Google from there...

"Why thank you Windows! I don't know which is worse, seeing those pesky blue screens or being shown the actual error message a web server is returning in IE. Troubleshooting is overrated anyway! I say, leave it broke." </sarcasm>
