system process 60%+ on boot up

(originally posted in Operating Systems...but I realized it maybe better suited here)

Ive got a machine here at work that started acting up on a user.
When logging it its very VERY slow... 45mins to get into windows and while its doing it the CPU is through the roof...nailed at 100%. Eventually it DOES get in but even once "running" the system process still sits at 30%+ at idle.

Ive run every adware checker, and many were certainly found, but Im still having issues. AV checked too and totally clean.

Any help anyone?

I used S&D already and adaware (free)
they found Gator, my search and hotbar just to name a few.

Office uses McAfee ASAP virus scan... always been solid. I doubt its a virus actually but who the hell knows

ok grabbed it... of course it already has an update (note to software companies: incorporate all updates to your products as you release them)

ANd of course after the update I have to reboot
Be back in 45mins 🙂

Make sure you have an update done on adaware (right above the scan button) and also download and run a program called cwshredder.

Well I left the machine on all night w/ it scanning.
And while it didnt find anything, it was running PERFECT (system idle process at 99% System at 0%)
So Im all happy right?

Reboot

Same crap.

Ill do one better...

FORMATTED

Much easier and she had no important info on there.

Problem solved... granted I was still curious.
Interesting thing I noticed too was the HD was spinning like MAD and was SUPER hot.

he couldn't have.

The problem was only when the system was starting up, not while the computer was running.

Unless you know something I don't, you can't simply have the task manager displayed when the system starts up.

You /can/ review the system registry to see what all programs run on boot... but this can be a bit confusing... even to vetern sys-admins. It can also be quite dangerous.
