System not reading HD correctly

Like it says guys, got a 200gig WD hard drive that my pc only reads as 127. Well sh*t hit the fan so I have to reformat the drive because Win2k was getting pretty sketchy on me. When I reformat it's again only going to read around 127gigs out of 200, I have it formatted in NTFS but still reads much much lower than I would like it to. The bios for my EPoX mobo is from July xx 04, so I would think it would be able to read closer to 200. Anyone wanna help me out and try to get it to read higher? Thanks.

You have and old IDE interface. 133GB was the theorecial max for those. You have to either get a new controller card, new motherbaord, or hopefully, maybe, this can be settled with a BIOS flash. Newer mobo's automatically will see the hdd as ~200GB.

Edit:
Hmm, i noticed you ahve an A64 system. Your problem is very odd... You may have to run some tests on your hdd to see if you have bad sectors. Also, if you can, try your hdd on another person's computer. Somethings fishy...

Thanks for the quick reply. Since I really really really don't want to spend anymore money on this right now, I'll try the bios flash and hopefully that'll fix it. I just figured it would of read closer to 200 gigs since the bios isn't that old in the first place.

Seperate question about the bios flash, since I don't own a single floppy disk, would it be possible to put the files onto a CD and just boot off that? Thanks.

haha, i wish! Unfortunately, BIOS flash can only be done via floppy. If you had ABIT, you would be able to do it within windows. Those are pretty much the only 2 options afaik.

The problem is that your OS doesn't support 48-Bit addressing. You will need to slipstream Win2k with the latest service pack to be able to use all 200GB when you next reinstall.

And I would go about doing this how? Still kinda new to the whole 'building my own pc' scene. Thanks

I agree. The problem is that you need the latest service pack for windows to see the whole HD.

Do a search for slipstreaming. There's tons of posts documenting how it's done. In a nutshell, you copy the windows 2000 CD to your hard drive, apply the service pack to the files from the CD, then re-burn it to a new CD. It lets you install windows with the service pack pre-applied.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters

Create a new DWord - EnableBigLba. Set the value to 1 and reboot.
