running asus p5ad2-e premium mobo, p4 3.2mhz cpu, 4x1gb ddr2 533, geforce7600 250mb card, 1x250gb and 1x1tb hard drive and a dvd drive, changed from 350psu to 550psu and added zalman cnps9500a cpu fan.

put computer back together, powered back on the computer without fan plugged in, plugged fan into pwr fan 1 and have shorted that connector.

switched off computer plugged fan into cpu fan switched back.

system running bios detects all drives but wont load windows from hard drive or dvd drive, have cleared cmos moved jumpers for 10 min, have been getting messages cpu over voltage error, new cpu installed config setting etc if i press f8 the computer ask for bootable media, does not recongnise hard drive or dvd drive could the mobo or cpu be damaged

The above two bolded statements seem to conflict. In the BIOS, do you have the boot sequence set to boot from the dvd drive first? If you can get to the BIOS, it's unlikely the CPU was damaged.

have got a bit futher system running comes up cpu fan error f1. have run hard drive using f8 but it keeps say enter bootable media does not seem to read the drive, then ran windows disc and get the reply detected multiple discs in machine that are indistinguishable or detected raw disk(s). set up has corrected the problem and needs to reboot. set up cannot continue. press any key to exit.

really lost now could the hard drive got shorted when the fan got pluged in??????

I suppose it is possible that there was some static discharge when you were working inside the case that hit the drive.

What brand drive is it? For instance, WD has some diagnostic software you can burn and run http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=606&lang=en
