system logs on, blinks on the desktop, and logs back off within 2seconds

Hello friends,
my system goes through it's normal set up then goes to my login screen , which was not there until I downloaded frameworks update( hate it). anyway,I click on the login icon , the windows music plays, flickers into desktop (1 second) then logoff music plays and goes back to loggon screen and says logging off .WTF is happening. could this be a virus ? I have much data that I need to get to and I may have to pull the drive out and use an external bay for getting the data out before reinstalling xp pro. I would appreciate any help with this. dimarrco

Try a repair install first, if that doesn't work you might have a trojan - this is a classic symptom of several of them.

thanks for the help, and excuse me for the "wt?". I did a repair with my disc, it seemed to boot up just fine. Only once!! found some trojans and got rid of those. but they seem to be renaming themselves. and try to change registry. I am now in the process of reformatting that comp.Do I need to download MS Framework update? It makes me loggin and I don't find it nessecary for my needs. What does it do ? I read about it but not quite sure Dimarrco

You only need the .NET framework if you run applications written in .NET. It's not necessary for most users (yet), but as .NET applications become more commonplace you will likely need the framework.

Why in the world are you reformatting? You won't be able to diagnose the issue now. :|

Download and run and install the Microsoft Antispyware tool and these problems (which you've just experienced) will be minimized ... find an easy link in my .sig.
