System Lockups after upgrade

After a recent upgrade of my cpu, motherboard and ram along with a new PSU, my computer(specs listed below) has been acting very wierd lately. Firefox for example locks up randomly or the system becomes extremely sluggish if I attempt to multitask. If I attempt to play games like CS:S, the computer either freezes or the game is a slideshow(both visuals and sound). My specs are listed below...

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (upgraded from a Intel P4 2.53 GHz)
RAM: 512MB PC3200 DDR (upgraded from 512MB PC800 RDRam)
Motherboard: Gigabyte 7VT600P-RZ (upgraded from a generic Intel motherboard)
Video Card: ATi Radeon 9800 pro AIW
Hard drive 1: 160gb Seagate
Hard drive 2: 80gb Maxtor
DVD drive and a CDRW drive
PSU: 350W (upgraded from a 235W)

Aside from CPU RAM motherboard, everything else is the same as my last system. Everything was fine util the upgrade. I talked to a few friends who said that my power supply might be the problem. We came to this conclusion as I randomly get messages during startup which tell me to plug in my power supply cable to my video card. This usually happens after the system locks up and I have to restart. I have removed one of my Hard drives and this problem is less frequent now but the system is still very sluggish during gameplay and multi-tasking.

Is 350W not enough for this system? I was doing completely fine along with 2 extra fans with my older system which had a 235W PSU. Does the AMD cpu really take up that much more power?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That would depend on the QUALITY (brand\model) of the PSU.

You need to look at the +12v & +5v ratings on the PSU. If it is
not rated at atleast 25A on the +12v side and 30A on the +5v
side it may not be sufficient.

Also, it is never wise to do a Processor change without a CLEAN Install of the OS.

Did you perform a Windows Repair Install after changing the mobo?

You CANNOT just swap mobos and reboot. A repair install wipes the device manager and forces Windows to redetect and install all hardware as if it was a new install (you do notlose your installed apps or data). You will need to install the latest mobo, video, sound and NIC drivers afterwards (IMPORTANT: ALways install the mobo driver first). You will also need to install all the Windows Updates afterwards.

Instructions here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

A repair install usually works just fine 99% of the time. In some rare instances you may still have issues and may need to resort to a clean install of Windows.

After upgrading, windows was not starting so I just installed it over my old installation. If I cannot fix this, I will resort to doing a clean install. Thanks for your help.
