System lockup with NEC-3520A & Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic DVD

Every time I try to burn a CD or a DVD using my NEC ND-3520A and Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic DVD 7 Suite (which was bundled with the drive); the system locks up during the writing process. This is getting to be super annoying, because basically it makes my software worthless. I have no trouble writing audio CDs using Winamp Pro 5.08, so that leads me to believe its the software that's acting up and not the drive, or either its an incompability with the drive and the software suite.

Tips, tricks, advice, anyone? :)

It does sound like a software problem. I have the same burner and have had no problems with Nero or DVD Shrink.

Trial verison

Try Nero 6 first. I stop using Roxio years ago.

If you're worried about price, don't buy retail. Plenty of online vendors and flea bay that sells it alot cheaper.

Is the Roxio replacing a previous burning software? It might be conflicting with drivers and/or registry items that are still there.

I stopped using Roxio a couple years ago, when it hosed my setup on install. Second the others' reccy to try Nero. You can d/l the full version as trialware and see what you think. Nero is a superb program, very stable, and the company is constantly releasing minor upgrades and builds to tweak it. Some of the secondary or tertiary apps are kind of weak (does anyone actually use BackItUp?), but the core apps are beyond reproach. And I think PC Mag just bumped Roxio out of Editor's Choice, in favor of Nero 6.6.

For the amount of stuff you get w/Nero, the $70 price is a bargain, I think. But like someone else said, make sure you've removed all vestiges of Roxio or any previous burning software before installing.

another vote for Nero 6.6 suite.

I bought Easy Media Creator 7 because I had enjoyed Easy CD Creator 5 platinum and just assumed it was better than Nero (older Nero was kind of weak) which was bundled with my new burner.

OMG what a mistake that was!

I uninstalled the old ECDC 5 and installed my brandy new EMC7. I already knew about the 120MB update on the Roxio site and dl'd that and installed it too.

The software never got off the ground for me. The Media Center Home started, ignored any input from keyboard or mouse and then shut itself down with no hint of a reason why.

So I went to the Roxio site and began to read the support forum and FAQ. Problem after problem listed there I read and said to myself.... yeah, mine is doing that too.

I tried every fix they offered. Some were pretty extreme such as "uninstall Office 97 or higher and re-install it to fix some damaged file. or my personal favorite, go to the registry and give every key full permission to any level user... bye bye security

Finally, I just uninstalled the entire mess and decided to try the Nero 6.6. IT WORKED SEAMLESSLY on the first try and contains all the features I need (couldn't seem to find much difference between it's features and those EMC7 promised... except NERO WORKED!

Did I mention that NERO 6.6 WORKED :D

So I guess I have now officially joined the ranks of those who WILL NEVER TRUST ROXIO AGAIN

An expensive lesson

Yes Nero is your easiest fix.

EZCD has had 3 owners; Adaptec, Roxio, and currently Sonic. When it works it's really easy to use (Just don't count on thier UDF working on other machines or OSes) .

That said, the latest adaptec ASPI drivers (previous research) can mess things up in an odd manner. I think Majorgeek had several versions (I think 4.6 is desired 4.7 is problem)if you want to look into it. Research with Goggle web and Goggle groups before you change them because I'm not sure which versions of EZCD were affected.
