System lockup (video related?)

i just finished doing a full system reformat/reinstall 2 or 3 days ago, and since then i have experienced several instances where the system locks up.

it seems to occur (or it may just be coincidence) when i'm using the mouse, i.e. scrolling or clicking on something. when the freeze happens, the screen immediately flashes black, then vertical streaks of color appear filling the screen, along with a white box where the cursor was. if any sound or music was playing, it repeatedly studders. ctrl-alt-delete doesnt do anything, and the only way to fix it is to turn off the system or press the reset button.

my video card drivers are up to date, and after this happened once or twice, i made sure my motherboard drivers were the latest, and the problem still occurred. all my other drivers are up to date (at least to my knowledge).

do any of you have any ideas what could be causing these lockups, and how to solve the problem?

Intelligent responses cannot be given without some vital info....

1. Hardware
2. Operating System
3. List everything you fiddled before the lockups.

As an FYI....having the latest drivers isn't necessarily a guarantee for a healthy system...cough cough Nvidia cough cough.

Go to Display Properties, and bump the Video Acceleration down a notch or two, and report back.

In my system: Display Properties-->Settings-->Advanced button --> Troubleshoot.

Well then, this is where I come in....

Have you made sure the transducers are properly aligned with the mainboard capacitors?

whoops, sorry about that...
1. its my gaming rig, in my signature
2. windows 2000 sp4
3. um, if you mean right up to the lockups, i'm pretty sure i was just surfing the web, nothing special, when it happened.

erm.... I'd say eliminate the system memory as a possible cuplrit... your best way of detecting bad video ram is unfortunately process of elimination. RUn memtest86 for a few passes, like 3, to see if that does alright.
