System locks up after 1 hour of use

I just recently got a Abit KT7 and and T-bird 850. System has been locking up after about an hour or so of use. I think it may be the temp but not quite sure. Any suggestions? If it is the temp, can anybody suggest a good heatsink/fan to go onto the KT7. The good one i have would break off a piece off the motherboard if i force it. I'm using a budget one with about 4000 rpm. Not quite sure what type of RAM but it is 128mb PC100. I'm using parts from an old K6-2 333 I built 2 years ago. It worked fine up till i got this motherboard and processor. I know I'm doing something wrong, I just don't know what. I'm a newbie to this whole forum stuff, so if I need to give more info just tell me what to write. Thanks

Run the system with the cover off. If heat is a problem this should let you know.

Tell us what your temps are. You can check using motherboard monitor, and it should also tell you under PC Health Status in the BIOS. It sounds like temperature to me, too...

Go into msconfig and turn off findfast and office startup... that worked for me...

How accurate are these monitors ? The onboard bios says 89°C or around 170°F but when examine the CPU, it's bearly warm to the touch.. and this is on both my motherboards...

The Windows monitor says the temp is mid 40s, while the BIOS monitor says its mid 50s. I don't know whick one to trust more, but i'm going with the BIOS monitor. The thing is, i can only check it at startup, or in restart, so i'm thinking the temp goes down on restart. I don't know. I've also been running with the casing off, and thats not hlping. It did drop the temp from mid 60s though. Another thing that just happened recently is that black vertical line appeared on my screen. It just happened once, but maybe it can tell you guys something. I'm thinking its the video card. Another thing i should ad is that the power supply is originally for my k6-2 333. Is this a problem that would be caused by a wrong power supply? The system also used to hang write at the first time I would run windows after installing it. That windows would appear, say all the things you can do with windows and then you would check the box to make it never appear again. When that would pop up, it kept on freezing. But at the time, my drive was segmented, and i didn;t reformat some of the segments. After I formatted all the segments, that problem stopped. So i'm thinking it may be the hard drive. When it freezes, the screen stick as is. If i'm surfing a page and it freezes, the screen sticks on that, with the mouse pointer stuck in the last place it was.

First try a AMD approved PSU,300w is your best bet on this, next try a AMD approved heatsink/fan,the Taisol CEK733092 is cheap & approved by AMD,if you still get problems go back to reformat & reinstall OS,the Via 4 in 1 drivers should be the first thing installed,followed by DirectX,then video ,sound card drivers.Your problem sounds like ,power or temperature problem to me.

i had a similar lockup with mine... exactly the same

i was using an asus a7pro mombo... downloading and flashing the bios fixed all these lockups...

i'd visit the website and flash the bios with the most recent version (be sure to follow the directions) if I was you

might be memory too... I'd borrow a stick from someone you know and see if that solves your problems...
