System lock-ups

I recently installed a Visiontek Xtasy 5632 Geforce2 GTS in my computer. The difference in 3D gaming compared to my old Nvidia STB Vision Velocity 128 is night and day. Problem is I get these iritating system lock-ups when running normal everyday 2D applications. Everything runs great when playing a game but try to surf the net and it can't go 2 min. without locking up and going unresponsive. The only way I can avoid this is to turn the hardware acceleration performance seting to low.
I have tried both versions of Win 98 drivers that came on the CD and also downloaded the most recent driver from Nvidia. Nothing seems to help. I tried contacting Gateway's tech support and they said The card won't work with my system because it has DDR SGRAM. Looking for a second opinion and any tech advice I can get to solve this problem.
My system is : (yes, I know it is old)
Gateway G6-233
Intel 440 LX system board
Pentium II 233 MMX
160 MB PC66
Visiontek 5632 Geforce2 GTS
creative labs audiopci sound card
a generic pci modem
O/S Win 98SE

Thanks in advance
Chuck

Hmm, the card may require a newer AGP slot than you have on that board.

However, if it is stable when you turn acceleration down, thats not bad. Is this not an acceptable solution for you?

You may want to try getting a utility to completely remove your old nvidia drivers and then reinsall the newest ones. THere are often problems with old garbage being left from old nvidia drivers causing problems, so thats worth a shot.

It is just a pain to have to keep changing the settings all the time. "LOW" for normal operations but if I want to play a game I change it to "FULL" and reboot. I was hoping someone had a better solution. I did download Powerstrip and using the diagnostic report I found that the system board has AGP revision 1.00 and the graphics card has AGP revision 2.00. Is there any way to overcome this.
