Maybe I'm expecting too much, but here is what I just built:
DFI AK75-EC motherboard
TBird 1.2GHz/266 CPU
256MB PC133 SDRAM
Hercules Prophet II MX
30GB Maxtor 7200RPM ATA/100 hard drive
HP CD-RW 10x4x32
I'm running dual boot with W98/W2K w/ SP2. With 3dmark2001 I get about 2600 using the default 1024x768 benchmark. The games I play (Max Payne, Serious Sam) play fine. It's the general application performance that seems a bit sluggish... Outlook, IE, Word, Excel, Photoshop, etc... I did just pull this harddrive out of another system (Duron 800, MSI K7T Pro2A board) and popped it into this new system without reinstalling the OS'es. Could this be part of the problem? I did make sure to install the new VIA drivers, new detonator's, etc...It's not a heat issue...systemtemp is running at 31C all the time and the CPU temp never gets over 48C. Maybe I'm expecting too much. It just seems like my PC here at work (W2K, P3, 800, 256MB RAM) just really outperforms my 1.2GHz system at home. Is there any suggestion OS tweaking that you guys would recommend? If I do reinstall everything, whatpatches, updates, etc... would you recommend installing, and in what order? I've poked around on here and checked out some of the guides at tweak3d.net but still not having much luck. Is it recommended to just go ahead and reformat and reinstall everything when moving a harddrive to a new system? Thanks for any advice!
