System Idle Process

I just reinstalled XP on a new SATA drive. Everything is fine except on bootup XP is busy for about 1-1.5 minutes during what is really the startup time. If I look at the task manager at the processes, it shows "System Idle Process" at utilizing 98-99% of CPU, which is obviously the hang. It won't let me "end process".

How can I figure out what the process is easily?

In the grand scheme of things it's not a huge deal because I don't reboot too often, but it's rather annoying.

Thanks.

system idle process means your computer is doing nothing.

when it's at 99% (basically max) it means the CPU is doing NOTHING else for any other program/application.

start even a web browser and watch it go down even just for a split second, and then back up to 99% when it's done loading.

you can move the mouse around too and watch the idle process go as low as like 95%, stop moving the mouse and it goes back to 99% system idle process.

All it is saying is that your system is 98=99% idle.

Though if to see whats really going on go ahead and put it in realtime ;)

That makes sense. I can move the mouse and even double click on things, but it sits until it's "finished" and then all the stuff I double clicked pops up all at once.

Not sure.

It sounds like you have a lot of stuff loading up. Use msconfig and look at the startup list, disable all the stuff you don't need running and see if that helps. You might also want to download and run "Highjack This", if you don't know what everything is just post your hijack this log and let someone tell you what you can get rid of.
