System idle process constantly at 100% CPU utilization...

When I press Ctrl-Alt-Del to look at my Task manager, I see the the System Idle process is more or less constantly at 80%-100% which needless to say is making my computer 'chug' and slows down my net surfing etc considerably! Has anyone else ever had the same problem and what did you do to fix it? Any answers welcome!

OK well the reason i asked was because while it was 80-100% the system slowed down considerably before it went back down, like a HEAVY case of lag! What else could it be? I have no progs runing the background, all of my drivers are fine, its only happened since i put my new 1800+ in. Could it be heat related? Oh ah heck it ill just do my usual tinkering around to fix it.😀

lol, it should be the other way around! Your computer is supposed to be fast when the idle time is high and slow when it's low!

System Idle process simply indicates that the processor isn't doing anything. At 100%, it shows that the processor is waiting for something to do.

system idle process executes hlt commands similar to software coolers. It can be used as an indication of how much of your cpu cycles are "idle" waiting for things to do.

lol I realize what the System Idle process means, what i'm saying is that as it reached 80-100% my computer slowed down! I just experienced the same thing 5 minutes ago before it calmed down, and everytime my computer stuttered was when the system Idle rose and the CPU utilization decreased, its freaking me out... 😕

Could be a virus/worm. I mean, viruses, sheesh, whooo gets thoooose now? [/sarcasm] Scan your computer up mate.

Another thought... doesn't Windows sometimes schedule tasks to be done while the system is "idle?" I thought that was a time for Windows to index files or cruise around checking out the HD...

That my friend is the best answer i've seen yet, i didnt think of that, i'll have a peek and see if thats the case. And as for worm/virus i've just done a full scan with Norton 2003 and TCMonitor (Trojan scanner) and all appears to be cleaner than a nun's naughty bits. 😀
