System Hives, and the Registry

Hello all,
I recently had to reinstall WinXP pro.
Now, I really don't want to reinstall all the software I have on my slave drive/ Which use to be my Primary.
Can't I load a Registry hive or something like that to get all my software back online?
Seems I've done this before, but have forgotten what to do.
