system hangs on shutdown - anybody, help, please!

per title, my system consistently hangs on shutdown. at first i thought i could live with it (just do shutdown, then manual turn off once it hangs), but it's driving me nuts! i really like the auto-shutdown feature.

here's my system:
win2k pro, all the latest patches & service packs installed.
ecs k7s5a mobo, latest bios flashed
athlon xp 1800+
2x256MB crucial pc2100 dram
visiontek geforce3 ti200 vid card
hercules gtxp sound card
ati tv wonder pci card
creative modem blaster pci card

the interesting thing is, i only get this problem when both the hercules and ati cards are in the system. there is clearly some kind of conflict between the drivers or something that causes the hang. i just can't figure out what it is. i've called them both & they're no help - ati just says tough luck & hercules ignores me completely! i think it's mobo independant 'cause it happened with an msi k7t pro as well (i ditched that board on ebay 'cause it was giving me lots of other problems as well).

any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated. this is one sweet system that performs well & is pretty reliable, with the exception of this one issue.

thanks in advance,

joe

<< Have you tried placing the cards in different slots? >>

thought about it, didn't try it - since ACPI is enabled they'll all get
irq 11 anyway, right? in which case i don't see how it would help.

any other ideas? anybody?

yea hercules tech support blows!

<< actually different card placement can SOMETIMES make a difference in spite of ACPI! >>

I have to agree also! It looks like you have lots of PCI cards!

actually just three - the vid card is in the pci slot. i also have the on-board nic enabled. is three a lot of cards? (the system has 5 pci slots)

😉

I use a 5 PCI slot ASUS mobo and am running 4 cards with no issues (Creative Audigy Platinum, Promise Ultra100TX2, 3Com 3C905C-TX, Realtek LAN). But that's lucky. Some boards are just better at it than others.

I also suggest switching card slot locations and try to assign IRQ 5 in the BIOS for the sound card and IRQ 5 Legacy reserved.

actually, i think this is more a software issue than hardware - i think the drivers for the ati & herc cards don't play well together &/or win2k has some issue when shutting them down. like i said, i've tried this on two mobos & had exactly the same issue, but if i pull either one of the cards i'm ok.

sadly can't do any irq assignments in the bios - the ecs bios doesn't offer this. plus, i'd have to turn off acpi which disables auto-shutdown anyway!

I know.....leave it on 24/7 and crunch ECCp for Team Anandtech 😉 you can get all the info Here 🙂 I'm sorry it doesn't directly address your issue but I couldn't resist a little shameless recruiting because we really need the help 🙁

I didn't see mention of your hard drive so I assume you're running an IDE system. If you're running SCSI make sure your termination is correct. If your host is expecting auto-termination and the drive isn't set for that, you can hang during reset (at least an IBM Intellistation will) while the drive otherwise appears to work normal.

yeah, i'm running ide. thanks anyway!

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers installed for you system and don't overclock anything.
