I got home today and turned on my TV which I use as my monitor and there was the usual desktop from when I was on it last. I stepped away for a while and when I came back the TV was saying no signal. This is not unusual when the computer is idle. I did a hard reboot with the power button and when it rebooted it hung at the ASUS BIOS screen. Pressing F2 or Del did not get me into BIOS. I posted a thread about a similar problem and it turned out that it was over heating because of dust and cat fur. I cleaned it and that solved the problem. I did this again and the computer booted ok. I had to reset the BIOS but it was working ok. When I got to the desktop it was sluggish and the mouse took a while to respond. I opened my browser but I couldn't get sound so I did a soft restart. They system hung again on shut down so after about 10 minutes I did another hard reboot. It hung again at the ASUS posting screen. I left it for a while maybe 15 minutes and Windows boot menu came up but when I booted it hung at the "Windows starting" screen. So any ideas as to the problem? It's an old system so I have no problem replacing the MB/CPU but want to know what I need to replace. If I could get into BIOS I would boot from a Linux boot drive to check hardware but can't get to BIOS.

Update rebooted again. It hung at the ASUS screen and I just left it there. After another 15-20 minutes it went into BIOS. I had pressed F2 when it posted. Everything looks ok in BIOS. CPU temp is about 93F which is normal. When it was clogged with fur CPU temps were 125F.

What are the specs on this system? Though based on the symptoms, it sounds to be like it could be a storage issue, where a failing drive is causing system hangs, even when trying to enter BIOS.

You may want to replace the lithium battery on the motherboard. Those batteries die when they get old and that can prevent the computer from getting past the bios boot sequence. The other solution is to reset the bios to default settings. It could be a memory issue or a failing/failed hard drive with bad sectors.

It's an old FX8350 system with this board. It is 9 years old and I use it every day as my primary desktop for media streaming. I have been doing a lot of transcoding lately but it is not overclocked and has water cooling. But something is bound to fail at some point. It hanging at the post screen and then not being able to get into BIOS, seems it would be a motherboard issue? If I can get into BIOS will that show if the battery is ok?

You just need to pop in a new 2032 Lithium (coin) battery. That will also reset your bios to stock settings. You said your computer was old. 9 years old is definitely enough time for the battery to become weak or die on you.

Yeah it could be the CMOS battery, and that is a pretty cheap and simple fix. Once that is done, I would check SMART on the storage if possible.

I managed to get into system repair and a system repair seemed to fix everything. The system worked fine and was responsive. I transcoded a DVD no problem while I streamed video. The only weird thing was that I tried to start speccy to check my drives and it wouldn't start. I have looked at the drives within the last month or so and everything was green. I shut down and when I rebooted this weekend same problem occurred, hang at ASUS post screen. I'll grab a battery. It uses this battery, CR2032 3V Li-ion battery. I think I can get one at any drug store. I already ordered a new motherboard in case because I should really upgrade the system. It is pretty slow with CPU intensive tasks. Upgrading is such a pain. That's what has kept me from doing it. Reinstalling and re tweaking 9 years worth of software will take me weeks if not longer.

You can easily clone it and restore to dissimilar hardware with a decent cloning software like Acronis. Even a direct clone should work fine if you boot to Safe Mode and remove drivers for all system devices related to mobo.

So I can boot to safe mode and avoid having to start from a clean install? I've always just started from a freshly partitioned drive when I have to upgraded in the past. I need to reinstall my video drivers anyway since I would be upgrading my video card too.

Got a new CMOS battery(after going to 3 different places) and the system is back up and running. When I booted after the battery change it went right into BIOS I left everything on Default. Prior to that it would hang at the POST screen then after maybe15-20 minutes it would go to BIOS. I haven't tried to reboot yet to see if everything is ok.

It's better to do the driver removal in safe mode before you put the cloned drive in the new PC. It will save you the time of re-installing years of software and other customizations you may have done.
I have a external dock with a cloning feature will that work?

Yeah that would work too. Does take quite a while though, depending on the size of the drive. Both drives have to be the same size though. It may refuse to clone if even a MB is out of order.

Sounds like it was just the battery then.
