A few weeks ago, I noticed I could no longer save items from Internet Explorer, by right click - save, or by clicking on a link to a zip file or something...
The error that would occur is, when I chose where to save the item, it would say 'The above file name is invalid', no matter what the file name, no matter the file type, and no matter what drive it is being saved to.

But I can still get files from an FTP, or IRC etc, just not through a browser.

I'm guessing Internet Explorer is at fault here? I'm using IE 6, and I've been regularly updating from Windows Update.

Ok, so I go to find out about how to reinstall it, and end up at Microsoft, where when I do the first step - sfc /scannow, it just does nothing and lists the parameters again.

I don't really want to uninstall the whole thing and reinstall, as I've heard its a huge PITA.

Second big problem..
Something funny going on with my NIC.. all of a sudden my Network Connections Service doesn't start up anymore (kinda times out), and because of that, the other services that depend on it wont start also.
If I go to the dependices tab for that service, it pop an error message and says -

'Win32: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.'

Now I'm on an ADSL line, I connect to it through a router, which is specified as a default gateway (192.168.254.254), and I have another PC which is behind it as well, so we both have specified IPs for the small LAN, but we get an IP from our ISP via DHCP.
In device manager, I can see my NIC, everything seems fine, the drivers haven't changed, and there is no indication of any trouble at all.
BUT, in network connections, where the protocols for the NIC are, it's blank.
If I refresh it, it says -

'The network connections folder was unable to retrieve the list of network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the network connections service is enabled and running.'

Now obviously, since that particular service will not start up... ?

Another problem:
If I run an executable that uses MSI installer, it will unpack okay, do whatever it does, but when it comes to the actual installing, it will sit there for a period of perhaps 20 minutes + doing nothing, and then, perhaps after I've ate and come back, it will start going through as it should.
This also happens when uninstalling.

I'm not sure if these are all related in someway, but again, any help is appreciated.
If you need further information, please let me know 🙂

Oh, and I don't really want to format, as I have a whole bunch of stuff I don't want to lose :/

Thanks again.
