windows xp sp2, athlon xp 2500 @ 3200, 1 gig corsair xms pc3200, WD 10,000 RPM Raptor. WHenever i print something, my computer screaches to a halt and is so slow i cant do anything. I am using the drivers that came with windows, i do a three finger solute and it shows that "system" is taking 99% of my cpu cycles, this is system not idle system process (im not a foolio). any ideas on how i can fix this?

Have you updated all the motherboard drivers? Is it a VIA or nForce board, maybe an update is in order? You could try the motherboard's parallel port settings in the BIOs, such as ECP/EPP, Bi-directional. You could try different settings and see if you get better results. I had one printer that refuse to act "normal" under ECP/EPP and switch it to bi-directional. It worked fine after that.

Did this always happen or after you installed sp2?

Gotta be a driver problem. Remove and reinstall. Just remove it in device manager and reboot. Should set it up correctly.

if the printer is usb it could be that its running on usb 1.0 and not usb 2.0 and thus causing the bottleneck. like was mentioned earlier service pack 2 is beta so it wouldnt be a shock if that was your issue at all.

Does it have parallel support? Maybe try using it via parallel port would be less resource restrictive.

running latest drivers and bios for all of my hardware, and come on guys, i have no spyware or viruses on my system, just read my sig. its a parallel printer, cant put USB in it cause it has no port, heck it just has one place for an ink cartridge and i have to swap it out if i want colour
