system frozen on the "reboot" screen

i have Kalyway 10.5.3 installed on a Shuttle SD30G2. Everything seemed to work alright.

recently, i noticed some slowdowns. i don't know if it was this reason, or because i wanted to keep current, but i installed the latest updates using the mac update.

after the installs, the system instructed a reboot. after the reboot, i can't get rid of that screen. no matter what i do, that reboot screen keeps popping up.

did i break it? is there anything i can do besides a complete reinstall?

I dunno if you can use the normal software update when your running a hackintosh, I recall in the past you couldn't.

Kaido would be your best bet with this one, our resident Hackintosh guru.

i'm pretty sure i misread, but i thought the latest kalway allowed for the system update? am i wrong? from the looks or it, i guess i am.

if i reinstalled kalway, do i need to reinstall all the applications, or will it work like an "upgrade"?

that is true, you can not use system update on a hackintosh

thats why im still at 10.4 and havnt bothered to upgrade

Do you know what updates were downloaded? I always check the InsanelyMac forums before downloading any updates to ensure compatibility. I also keep a Time Machine backup as well as a SuperDuper backup (you can put them on the same drive) to make sure I'm covered.

Also, as hard as it may be to do, you may just want to stick with what's stable. I'm still on 10.5.2 because ALL of my apps work perfectly...until I have a pressing reason to upgrade I will probably stick with it since it works so well.

you guys make sense.

the install was this goliath 407mb upgrade.

my lack of experience in with all of this broke it. i'll do a full reinstall, and keep leave things until the hackintosh community issues fixes, or instructs which fix to install.

as for time machine, does it work with hackintosh systems? i thought i read it was the one thing that gave problems?

Are you sure you're running 10.5.3? 407MB sounds like the 10.5.3 update. The 10.5.3 update cannot be installed normally on a Hackintosh. It will break it. Also, just about any update will break it if you are not running a vanilla kernel. My Hackintosh is running Kalyway 10.5.3 with a vanilla kernel, and I have installed every update in Software Update.

you're right. it's kalyway 10.5.2. there's a kalyway 10.5.3 update that i'll download after the reinstall.

the vanilla kernel you mentioned, is it the one installed w/o any customizations?

No. You need to press F8 for boot options when you first get the Darwin screen and enter "vanilla". Then, you neeed to customize your install and select the top option.
