System Freezing Unable to Discover Source of Problem

I am having trouble with my computer. I have financial limitations so I need aas much help troubleshooting the problem before I go and buy the required hardware.

This is what happens. I will play a game and my system will lock up. What ever note is playing through my speakers at the time will be held and amplified. No response from mouse or CTRL+ALT+DEL. I am forced to reset using the button on case. I feel that it is an over heating issue because I now need to run my system with the side panel removed. If the side panel is on My system will freeze shortly after start up. With it removed it will only freeze when playing games like 'Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow' 'HL2' 'Uru: Ages Beyond Myst' and 'Max Payne 2'. And every once in a while it will lock up while playing a web based game. My system will also freeze up faster with both sticks of 512MB RAM installed (1GHZ) So I keep it at 512MB. I have also swaped RAM locations and Sticks just in case one slot or stick was bad. The CPU is not overheating it runs between 48C and 60C degrees. I have no idea at what temp. my GeForce 4 is running at. I have read that some sound cards preform poorly the farther down they are in the slots. So I have my Santa Cruz in the 3rd slot from top. I don't think it is the sound card, but who knows? The power supply that I am running is an ANTEC true 430 430w. I'm sure I'm not under powered. Can you ever be over powered?

Thats everything that I know at the moment. I would sincerly appreciate any help that you all could give.
Anyone have any ideas

Have you tried running memtest on your memory, with both sticks in? Also that does sound like a heating issue, especialy if you have to take the side off of the case. Make sure you cpu fan is spinning freely, and isn't plugged up with dust. Are you using any thermal paste?

I'll clean out my fan and see if it makes a difference. I do use thermal paste. I have started using Mother Board monitor 5 and noticed that my processor is running at 91% to 100% even while playing a simple browser based onling game. Could that be a clue fo another problem?

Have you checked for spyware/adaware, or run a virus scan recently? Using a firewall? Asking because the high cpu usage is a warning sign of viruses or spyware..
