System *freezes* on file transfers

I got a Seagate 7200.7 off of the FS/FT forum and I've been trying to move my MP3 collection onto it. Here's what I got:

IBM 60gxp 40.0 GB - NTFS - has run flawlessly for almost 2.5 years
Seagate 7200.7 40.0GB - NTFS - just quick formatted...

The problem is when I try to transfer a bunch of files it will just hang and the entire system will freeze with the HDD light steadily ON (I've left it for an hour...it was still frozen). I ran HDtach and they seem to be reading alright. Are there any health check programs i could run on either of these HD's? Maybe I should reformat the new one since I never got it to format fully under winxp (what is the best way to do that in XP pro...)?

Thanks...

sometimes IDE freaks out if you do a bunch of seperate filetransfers. I try to keep it to a minimum of 1-2 simultaneous transfers.

dont forget that if you hold [ctrl] you can keep selecting more files (keeping the transfer in on thread vs a bunch)

I do alot of transfers too because i have on older box on the network that does most of my downloading, so i constanly have to bring large files (movies mostly) across the net, i jsut grab as many as possible and keep it in one bug chunk, if i would break it into several it'll crash sometimes with an error saying something like "the path is too deep"

hope this helps

Sounds kind of sketchy to me...I should be able to transfer a bunch of 50 mp3s without it freezing on me, especially because the two hard drives are on separate IDE channels. I want to use this drive as a backup...how am I supposed to do that if I can't even transfer my files! Something else must be the problem.

are you sending them one at a time or in big groups?

if you wanna do 50 sepreate transfers at the same time, you need SCSI :)

just try to keep it down to 2-4 transfers and you should be fine

Hmmm...I have a feeling he highlighted them all in one group and transferred them...no where do I infer that he means he tried to send each one separately at the same time...

How are they arranged on you IDE channels???

Look at the power supply. how are your voltages...this can take some power and I have heard of flaky units do this. I think the drives are on either the 5v or 12v rail....Also try to have the drives connected with 4 pin molex connectors from different strained...i know, I know it sounds flaky as well, but I have seen it work....

I'm just highlighting them and copying them using My Computer...then it pops up the "copying file" box and freezes before it finishes. I'm thinking I didn't format correctly. Anyone else?

ide1&2 are cd drives, ide3 is the 60gxp and ide4 is the 7200.7. All are on separate cables set to master. The HDDs are using the same molex cable right now...I'll test with separate ones later.

dumb question...how do I check the power supply rails?

get a monitoring program like speedfan or MBM (motherboard monitor)...I am partial to speedfan since it installs and finds your stuff on its own..No manual setting stuff...

5V is @ 5.03V, 12V is @ 12.30V

I have a 330W enermax psu (check out my rig in the sig). Is this what's causing the problem?

Nope!!! that is pretty tight....

I would do a non-quick format and try again...If you get same issue I would maybe run a manufacturer specific utility program on the new drive....

I reformatted using Seagate's Utility and it seems to be working a lot better. This was a completely blank drive, so I don't think the file size should even matter. Thanks all...I'll revive this thread if I have more problems.

Hope it works! I was going to suggest checking that you had the latest IDE drivers from your motherboard manufacturer, if you had problesm still.
