My mother had a serious stroke 8 months ago and although she has made a remarkable comeback she is more isolated. Having a computer helps take up some of the slack. Wish all older adults were online.

Heh. I am on my 65 year old mums pc now. 1.6a @ 2.2 on an MSI845 Ultra-Aru, 512Corsair XMS2400, 2xMaxtor 40gig fluid drive ATA133 drives in a RAID1 mirror running XP Home. She can really crank out the pictures of the grandkids these days.

When I get the time to put together her I850e 1066 Rambus board she will own the fps crown amongst her card club pals.

Ma introduced me to pc gaming. She still plays a level of Wolfenstein 3d now and then on the old pIII 500 with the VooDoo3.

Yes. Ma is a 3DfX fangirl.😉

Sadly, the new computer that my dad and I built for my 85 year old grandfather owns my work system! He even sprung for the Canon PowerShot G2, which is a truly awesome digital camera.

You know, this really is a quality forum. You all are great.

I have considered a Duron 1.2, and could get it for $30 less but I'm trying to get a system together that will go for 3 years and I'm afraid the speed of the Duron may make this unrealistic. I put all of your ideas together and went to pricewatch, used the mb/cpu combos which is best for me, and chose the option that seemed closest to your suggestions. With the exception of the Duron. I'd like to save the $$s but her system, which I think has at least two hardware issues, is VERY slow. Slower than even a 300 MHZ should be x 4. Kinda made me gunshy for the Duron, although most likely without good cause.

Oh happy day...... All persons connected. BTW, I'm in the rehabilitation field which has increased my awareness of how important a good net connection is for persons who have physical impairments, whatever the age!

My dad would not even try to get on a computer and i wanted to teach him. My mom does through but shes not a gamer or anything. Just mostly a normal user. I mean she does pictures with her digital camera, internet, etc. I sorta wish i could of got my dad interested in the computer. He died from lung cancer which was caused by 2nd hand smoking at 44 years old 🙁 He never smoked a day in his life either but his parnets did smoke Like when he was a kid his parnets would like smoke in the car with the windows rolled up i think,etc. So it could of been from that or from a job he had with working with sheet metal. No one knows for sure. The strange thing is my mom's parnets smoked too when she was a kid but she never got lung cancer from 2nd hand smoking. I guess some people's bodys are different than others and some can handle it better than others. Not sure why. I just hate how it is.
