System doesn't "see" video camera

I've been trying to transfer my MiniDv tapes to DVD, but when I connect my Canon Elura 70 camcorder to my computer via USB, it's not being detected. I have tried several different video software capture programs with the same result. A couple I have tried are Sonic MyDVD and Pinnacle 9SE. After I've opened the software program and connected the camcorder and selected "capture", a dialog box pops up telling me that no video device has been detected and to check to make sure the cable is plugged in. I've tried all of the 6 USB ports on my computer with the same result. I know that the USB ports are working, since I use them to sync my Palm with the computer, and I connect my MP3 players to the computer with them, as well as to transfer pictures from my HP digital camera to my hard drive. My system is a Dell 4550, running Windows XP Home, with 768 mgs of PC2700 Ram. Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this?
