System Crashing...

My system is crashing and it's becoming a big problem since I have school work to get done.

The only error I can find is NVIDIA NDIS IO Control Driver Error at the time of the crashes.

That's pretty consistent considering I am getting ATI Graphics errors and sometimes the VPU can reset it's self and go into software rendering so I can safely reboot.

Other times the video output just stops and the box locks up.

Now this is odd to me because I have absolutely no NVIDIA anything in my computer.

CPU : AMD Athlon XP 2100+ @ 1.73 GHZ

Chipset : VIA

Mainboard : MSI KT3 Ultra Series 333/FSB

Video : Hitachi CM751 Monitor
Video : ATI Radeon 9600 256mb 128Bit DDR DRAM @ 4x (8x) AGP
Video : ATI Radeon Catalyst Ver. : 04.12

RAM : 1 G DDR SDRAM

All I can think of is it might be related to NVIDIA DVD controls I installed for Windows Media player. But those are universal.

Have any ideas? This is killing me...

I've just updated to Catalyst 5.2 with .NET Framwork.

Hopefully this will fix the problem.

Side note : The new Catalyst Control Center is great.

Alright. I decided to check my outlet.

It had no ground and I was running my system off reversed polarity.

I've rewired everything to the correct configuration and installed a power surge protector.

Let's just hope it isn't too late.

No one has any ideas?

It seems to only happen when I multitask with FireFox and MS Word.

Ok this is getting out of hand.

I found the problem. I installed NVIDIA DVD Decoder software to watch DVDs in WMP.

The error that is completely seizing up my computer is...

The NVIDIA NDIS IO Control Driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I have tried everything just short of re-installing.

This is killing me. I have to write a paper for school, along with take notes and do about a bajillion other things in Word and Word keeps crashing my computer with this error.

Please, try to take two seconds and help me out.

Need an incentive to not be selfish? Fine, help me fix this and I'll Paypal you 20 bucks.

This is really killing me here.

[edit]

I've cleaned my registry. Uninstalled DVD Decoder, reinstalled it, then uninstalled it again. All of which would still seize my computer up. And it ONLY happens in MS Word.

From this site: http://msmvps.com/chrisl/archive/2004/10/21/16360.aspx

System Requirements

* Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Home Edition
* DirectX 9.0 or higher
* Windows Media Center or Windows Media® Player 9.0 or higher for DVD Playback
* DirectShow compatible software for MPEG-2 file playback
* DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) compatible graphics processor supports, such as NVIDIA GeForce4? Series, GeForce FX Series, or GeForce 6 Series.
* DVD-ROM drive required for DVD viewing

I'm pretty sure if you try uninstalling your video drivers, uninstall the nvidia decoder, and reinstall your video drivers that you will be closer to fixing your problem, possibly even have it fixed. Even if you think that it won't work, give it a try ;)

No, I already tried that.

Fug it I'm just going to re-install. I mean it's been about 2 weeks, I'm waaaaay overdue. :p

I'm just going to finish this paper up in WordPad and then get started on the reinstall.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I read somewhere the DVD decoder was compatible with all video cards, like a lazy idiot I saw that and didn't investigate.

It's a good thing I got the trial first.

hehe, windows really is only usable for about a week until you need to reinstall anyways.

you could download and burn a copy of knoppix for occasions like this when you need to get a paper done, or just have an OS that works in an emergency. I believe that it ships with openoffice installed, and it is pretty good about finding any peripherals that are connected. just a thought though, good luck on the reinstall.

ahh thanks.

I have a Slax and Ubuntu Live CD and distribution Cds as well. I really enjoyed Slackware but I had to go back to windows to keep up with school. I didn't have enough time to study and to learn a new OS.

I used Open Office and I think it is a great program. I never, ever had a problem with it and I used it heavily for about 3 months straight.

Unfortunately, the Business industry standard are Word and Excel, so when I am exporting and importing spreadsheets etc. it is best and easiest to do it in Excel instead of cross loading an Excel spreadsheet in OO etc.

Ahh I've walked this road many times and with a thousand others before, what's one more time?
