System crashing randomly

Alright, for the past few days now my system has been crashing seemingly randomly. About a month ago I installed DSL and I dont have a firewall. I think it's probably some kind of virus that I need to format my harddrive for, but I'm not 100% sure, so here goes:

I can no longer open Word, Word Perfect, or Kazaa.
I get system lockups all the time, instead of once in a rare while like before.
About a week ago all of my drivers decided that they wouldnt run, and I had to reinstall every last one of them, some of the installations went well, some gave me error messages that did nothing and then continued with the installation.

I know I need a firewall, and I'd been meaning to get one, so I guess now is a chance for me to really get into action 😛 I also recently installed a new CDRW drive, but I don't think that's the problem. Its a Lite-On if it helps. So, virus? Something else? Thanks

What operating system are you using?
Have you run an Antivirus scan yet?
Updated your AV definitions lately?
Maybe run AdAware also.
