Hi all,

I'm going to be building a comp for a friend soon, and he wants the best he can get for about $1800 +/-. I drafted out a short a list, but I'm sure some of you guys could optomize it...

The general idea is a AMD64 cpu, nForce4 mobo, 6800 Ultra vid card (PCI-E x16) and a gig of ram.

DFI "LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-DR" - 170

AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 512KB L2 Cache - 630

Geil Ultra Series Value Dual Channel 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - 150

eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit - 639

NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive ND-3520A - 60

Hitachi 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive 8MB Cache - 135

Generic Case w/ Power Supply (maybe about 400w, looks not important) - 80

---

Mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc... is already covered or will be upgraded later.

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

i like that mobo.

Alot of people have encouraged me to back off a 3500 cpu since it costs twice as much as a 3000 and a 3000 can be oc'd well past 2.5ghz in some cases.

I guess its a personal choice, but the 3800 costing 600+ Id just go all out and get the FX one if I was spending 600+ on a processor. The only difference is a few hundred hertz and another 512 of l2 cache.

Also like your video card, wish I could afford that one :)

save $400 on the cpu and get a 3200+ and o/c it past those speeds

get a 6800GT and flash and o/c it to a 6800 Ultra (save $300)

there u go he now has $700 to save for future upgrades that will really help his system

This is my thinking , and you may or may not think along these lines.

I buy a nice case so I wont have to spend that money again anytime soon. I See alot of cases with plastic tangs and all kinds of garbagey flashy components it just makes me think theyll more than likely be forced into a new case when upgrade time comes around.

Power supplies are the same, I dont skimp, not saying Id spend 200$ for the one with all the extra knobs and stuff, but around 100$ and a good name seems right to me.

alright, I'll go down a bit on the CPU and maybe vid. card...

But how's the memory? is it okay? any other better choices?

Is everything else alright too?

I don't really see a point for dropping $640 on a videocard when hopefully in 6 months new generation of cards will be available.

For now, I'd get A64 3200+ or even 3000+ and overclock those to say 2.4-2.5ghz. I understand that 2.4 3800+ can be overclocked even here to say 2.7 but I don't think it's worth 3x the price.

Get X800XL for $370 or if you do really want to spent $500+ on a videocard, get X850XT or X850XT PE since they are faster than 6800U.
