I have the following components in my system:

P4 1.7
intel 850 motherboard
512 rdram
60 gb hd
geforce 3

If I add an ati9800 or nv35 do you think I'll get acceptable frame rates on the new games like doom3 or will my system bottleneck the new video cards too much?

New vid card (I'm a Radeon guy) should be the next step. You have a good mobo and enough RAM, When you see a CPU you like at the right price, grab that later. Right now, it looks like the GeForce 3 is holding you back, but after you get the Radeon, the processor will be the slow part.

Ditch that Williamette 1.7 and grab a Northwood if your motherboard can support it. That processor is, and will be, a total dog when the newer generation 3D games start coming out.

I agree, but a new processor right now will do nothing in a game as long as he has that GF3.
